After
independence lack of quality educational
facilities for Hindi speaking students,
particularly in the Burrabazar area was
engaging serious attention of several
enthusiastic social workers of the Marwari
community. Founder Members of Gyan Bharati
namely Sri Hari Charan Garodia,
Sri Nathmal Bhuwalka, Sri Matadin
Khaitan, Sri Purushottam Kejariwal and
Sri Nathmal Kedia took the lead
in the matter. Several eminent persons
like Sri Sitaram Seksaria, Padma
Bhusan, Sri Anandi Lai Poddar, Ex-mayor
of C.M.C. and M.L.A. and Sri Rameshwar
Lai Tantia, the then M.P. were
also associated. As the first step, Gyan Bharati
Society was formed on 24. 12.
1959. On 13th September, 1960 the
foundation stone of the school building at
64 A, Nimtolla Ghat Street, Kolkata-700006
was laid by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, an
eminent philosopher and educationist and
the then Vice-President of India. He spelt
out the basic doctrine for Gyan Bharati as
'practice of truth is the real
education'.The different schools under
Gyan Bharati started functioning at
different points of time. Gyan Bharati
Vidyapith and Gyn Bharati Prathamik
Vidyalaya were the first two schools which
started functioning on 26th January, 1962.
Keeping in view the paramount importance
of girls' education a separate school for
girls namely Gyan Bharati Balika Vidyalaya
was established in 1967. Similarly with
the growing importance of English medium
education, Gyan Bharati Vidyalaya (English
Medium) was started in 1986 as a
co-educational school.
